Colombian passports are issued at the consulate covering your state, always by prior appointment, and the booklet is printed in Bogotรก and shipped back to the consulate. The document that unlocks the whole procedure is the cรฉdula de ciudadanรญa: without a valid physical one, the file does not open.
Quick facts
Appointment slots are released on a schedule and go quickly at the busiest posts. Consulates also run mobile consular days in cities with no permanent office, offering the same services.
Fees breakdown
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary passport | Set by resolution, published by each consulate | Commonly quoted around $80–$140 |
| Executive passport, extra pages | Higher tariff | For frequent travellers |
| Emergency passport | Separate tariff | Limited validity |
| Passport for minors | Reduced tariff | Shorter validity |
| Payment | Cash or money order at most posts | Confirm before the appointment |
The tariff is set by resolution and converted for each post, so the figures circulating online disagree with each other. Take the amount from your own consulate’s page, not from a directory.
How to renew
- Register in the consular system and confirm which post covers your state.
- Book the appointment through the consulate’s portal or the ministry’s appointment service, connecting when slots open.
- Check the current tariff and prepare payment in the accepted form.
- Attend with your valid physical identity card and two photographs to the Colombian specification.
- Give biometrics and confirm that names and numbers are correct before leaving.
- Collect the passport once it arrives from Bogotรก, typically after about eight business days.
Required documents
- Valid Colombian identity card, physical, in original.
- Two recent photographs, white background, to the published size.
- Previous passport where you have one.
- Payment in the accepted form.
- For minors: the child’s civil birth record, a certified copy issued within the last three months, and the parent’s valid identity card.
- Authorisation from the absent parent where only one attends.
Where to renew
Consulates cover assigned states, and the nearest office is not always the competent one. Some posts accept postal applications for certain services from outside their district.

Check the booklet before leaving
An error in the name, date of birth or identity number means paying for a new booklet. Consulates advise checking at the counter rather than at home.
Nobody can sell you an appointment
Appointments and official payments run only through the ministry’s channels. Anyone charging to speed up a slot is operating outside them.
Mobile consular days
Jornadas in cities without a consulate offer passports, identity cards and civil registry work. Dates are announced by each post rather than centrally.
The identity card comes first
An expired or purely digital identity card blocks the passport at many posts. Renew it before booking anything else.
