Whether you need a visa for Belarus depends on your nationality, the purpose of the trip and its length โ and a growing number of countries have moved short visits to an online authorisation, which means the consular office may have no part in it at all. Settle that first, before arranging an appointment you may not need.
Belarus has a single consular office in the United States, in Washington, D.C. That removes the mistake that costs most people a wasted journey elsewhere โ there is no wrong office to choose, because there is only one, and it serves all fifty states.
Belarusian consular offices in the United States
Visa categories are not handled at every post. Apply through that one office:
It also means everything funnels through one post. Before planning a journey, ask that office two things: whether the application can be made by post or courier rather than in person, and whether it keeps appointments for applicants travelling from out of state. Many single-post countries handle most of their work by mail precisely because the alternative is a flight; some require attendance for biometrics or a signature and will say so.
If the answer is that you must attend in person, ask what happens if you cannot โ some countries send a consular officer on circuit to cities with a large Belarusian community a few times a year, and that visit is far cheaper than the trip.
Before you apply
- Confirm whether a visa is required at all for your nationality and your trip. U.S. passport holders are exempt in many countries and not in others, and the answer depends on your passport, not your residence.
- Identify the right category. Tourism, business, study, work, transit and family visits have different requirements, and applying under the wrong one usually means starting again.
- Ask whether the application is made online or in person, and whether biometric data is collected at an appointment.
- Ask the fee and the accepted payment method directly. Published tariffs change, and third-party sites quoting a price are often resellers.
- Allow far more time than you expect. Ask the office for its current processing time rather than relying on any general figure.
Documents usually requested
- A passport with validity well beyond the intended stay, and blank pages.
- The completed application form for your category.
- Photographs to the specification given.
- Travel and accommodation details, or an invitation where the category requires one.
- Evidence of funds, insurance or vaccination certificates where applicable.
- Proof of lawful residence in the United States, for third-country nationals.
A warning worth repeating
A Belarusian visa is permission to seek entry, not a guarantee of it. The decision belongs to the immigration officer at the border, and in most countries there is no appeal. Carry your supporting documents with you rather than in checked luggage.
