Armenia fully recognises dual and multiple citizenship, which makes the diaspora question a genuine choice rather than a dilemma. But that choice has a sharp edge, and it is about sons: citizenship brings military service, residency does not.
Quick facts
The rule is specific: men over 18 who are granted Armenian citizenship become subject to military service before they turn 37, unless they completed mandatory service of 12 months or alternative service of 18 months before acquiring it.
Citizenship or residency
| Consideration | Citizenship | Special residency |
|---|---|---|
| Vote and hold office | Yes | No |
| Military service | Yes, for men, until 37 | No |
| Armenian passport | Yes | No, use your national one |
| Tax residence by itself | No, presence decides it | No |
| Minimum stay or language | Test and oath required | None |
One reassurance worth stating plainly: obtaining Armenian citizenship while continuing to live abroad does not by itself make you an Armenian tax resident. That depends on physical presence or on establishing your centre of vital interests there.

Additional notes
Sons first, paperwork second
For diaspora families, the service liability is the decision that matters. Residency formalises the connection without creating it; citizenship creates it. Decide that before filing anything.
The oath comes before the documents
Passport, identity card and address registration are collected after the oath, not before.
The portal is new
Citizenship filings moved to a single electronic system in January 2026, so guidance written earlier describes a process that no longer applies.
Tax advice separately
Citizenship does not create tax residence by itself, but if you plan to spend real time in Armenia, take advice on where your interests sit.
