DR Congo Passport Renewal in the U.S. — 2026 Guide

Data last verified: September 2026

The Congolese passport is applied for online first, through the government’s own passport portal, and the fee is $75 plus whatever the bank adds. After paying through the banking link emailed to you, the embassy asks you to wait 72 hours for the transaction to register in the system before expecting anything to move.

Check your spam folder after pre-registering. The payment link arrives by email and the embassy specifically warns that it often lands there, which is the kind of detail that costs people a week.

Payment rules are strict and the embassy’s own pages are not entirely consistent: the consular affairs page states that all payments must be made by blank money order only, in capitals, while the passport page also mentions cashier’s and certified checks. A blank money order satisfies both, so that is the safe choice.

How to apply

  1. Pre-register on the official passport portal and complete the application form.
  2. Watch for the banking link by email, checking your spam folder.
  3. Pay the $75 plus any charges shown.
  4. Wait 72 hours for the payment to register before following up.
  5. Send the supporting documents to the embassy with a blank money order where a consular fee applies.
  6. Include a prepaid return label or envelope with a tracking number.

Required documents

Where to apply

Online for the application itself; documents go to the embassy in Washington, on Connecticut Avenue. There is also a representative office in New York.

No offices currently listed.

Additional notes

The tenant-lieu

Where a passport has expired, been lost or cannot be replaced in time, the embassy issues a travel document in lieu of a passport. It needs its own form, a copy of the previous passport, and a police report if the original was lost.

Blank money order

"Blank" means the payee line is left empty. Filling it in incorrectly is a common reason for a returned file, so follow the instruction literally.

Tracking both ways

The embassy requires a prepaid return label with a tracking number. An ordinary stamped envelope will not do.

Read the citizenship page first

If you also hold American citizenship, there is something important on that page before you travel.
