Check the fee before you buy anything. The embassy ran a reduced tariff of $180 for adults and $90 for under-18s, stated to revert to $250 and $125 after 30 June 2026. That date has passed, so the higher figures should now apply — but guides across the web still quote the discount, and the embassy’s own page is the only thing worth trusting here.

The passport itself is printed in Sudan and returned to the embassy by diplomatic pouch, which is why the wait runs to a month and a half. And the embassy states plainly that, while renewal services are running, it cannot extend a passport’s validity by seal or label. The old stopgap is not available.

The national number is the thread running through everything, and it is free the first time you obtain it. Replacing a lost one costs $25.
How to apply
- Book an appointment: the embassy does not take walk-ins for this service.
- Attend in person on the date given.
- Bring a copy of your expired passport, or your national number.
- For an applicant under 18, bring a national number document belonging to either parent.
- If the passport was lost, bring a police report.
- Allow 30 to 45 days, and track the passport online once the file is open.

Either parent’s number works
For a child’s application the national number document may belong to either parent, which helps families where one parent’s documents were lost.

The embassy observes both American and Sudanese holidays and publishes closure notices regularly. Check before travelling to Washington.
Renew early
With no seal extension available and printing done in Sudan, leaving a renewal late has no fallback.
