British Civil Records in the U.S. โ€” 2026 Guide

Registering a British child’s birth abroad is optional. The U.S. birth certificate already proves the birth, and the child’s British citizenship depends on the parents’ status rather than on any registration. What consular registration adds is a UK-style certificate issued through the General Register Office, which some people find simpler to produce to British institutions.

Marriages are the other side of this. The United Kingdom does not register marriages that took place abroad, and there is no route to add a foreign marriage to a British register. The U.S. marriage certificate, apostilled where needed, is the document British authorities use.

Because the service is optional and handled centrally, the cost is worth weighing against how often you actually need a British-format certificate.

How to file

  1. Decide whether registration is useful for your family, or whether the U.S. certificate is enough.
  2. Order the long-form U.S. birth certificate naming both parents.
  3. Apply through the consular registration service online and pay the fee.
  4. Send the documents as instructed, tracked, with the reference quoted.
  5. Receive the certificate, and order additional copies at the same time rather than later.
  6. Use it, alongside the U.S. certificate, for passport and citizenship files.

Required documents

Where to file

Applications are made online and processed in the United Kingdom. Consulates do not hold civil registers or issue certificates over the counter.

No offices currently listed.

Additional notes

Registration does not confer citizenship

A consular birth registration records an event. Whether the child is British depends on the nationality law rules that applied at the date of birth.

Deaths abroad

A death can also be registered consularly, which produces a UK-format certificate that probate registries and pension providers accept readily.

Keep the American original

The U.S. certificate remains the primary record. The British certificate supplements it and does not replace it.

Order copies once

Ordering several certificates at registration is much cheaper than requesting them individually years later.
