A Thai electronic passport cannot be renewed in the ordinary sense. When it expires you apply for a new one, in person, at the embassy or a consulate general, because the biometric data has to be captured again. There is no postal route.
Quick facts
By the standards of this directory those are remarkably low fees. A ten-year Thai passport at $55 costs less than a third of what several neighbours charge, and a fraction of the Cuban or Polish tariff.
Fees breakdown
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic passport, five years | $37 | Standard option |
| Electronic passport, ten years | $55 | Adults only |
| Thai national identity card | Consular tariff | Also issued at missions |
| Emergency travel document | Consular tariff | Return to Thailand |
| Return postage | Prepaid envelope you supply | Express service advised |
Thailand is one of the few countries that will issue or renew its national identity card at a mission abroad, which spares a trip home for a document most Thais need for banking and property.
How to apply
- Check which mission covers your state, since jurisdiction is applied strictly.
- Book the appointment through that mission’s online system.
- Complete the forms, which differ depending on whether the passport has already expired.
- Attend in person for the biometric capture.
- Pay by money order or cashier’s check made out to that mission.
- Supply a prepaid express envelope if you want it posted.
Required documents
- Current or most recent Thai passport.
- Thai national identity card, or the house registration document.
- Proof of address in the United States.
- Documents supporting any change of name.
- For minors: both parents, or consent with certified signatures.
- Appointment confirmation.
Where to apply

The identity card matters as much as the passport
For anything done in Thailand — a bank account, a land office, a hospital — the identity card is the document that counts. Renewing it while abroad is worth the appointment.
House registration
The household registration record is the underlying civil document in Thailand, and missions may ask for it. Keep a copy.
Honorary consulates
They assist and provide information but do not issue passports. Check what yours actually does before travelling to it.
Plan ahead
A month or more is normal, and there is no expedited service abroad. Apply before the passport expires rather than after.
