Most travellers to Nepal, including U.S. citizens, obtain a visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport or at land borders, paying by duration. A consular visa in advance is an option rather than a requirement for tourism, which makes the embassy’s visa work narrower than most.
Quick facts
Trekking is where people come unstuck: the visa admits you to the country, but restricted areas and national parks need their own permits, arranged in Nepal and checked on the trail.
Fees breakdown
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tourist visa, 15 days | Published tariff | On arrival or in advance |
| Tourist visa, 30 days | Higher tariff | Most common choice |
| Tourist visa, 90 days | Higher again | For longer stays |
| Trekking and park permits | Charged in Nepal | By area |
| Extension | Charged in Nepal | Immigration department |
Work, study and volunteering categories need documentation from the institution in Nepal and are better arranged through the embassy before travel.

Additional notes
Nepalis need no visa
A Nepali citizen travels on a Nepali passport. People of Nepali origin who have naturalised abroad should read the citizenship page.
Altitude
Trekking permits are the administrative side; altitude sickness is the real risk. Insurance covering helicopter evacuation is worth checking before you go.
Overstaying
Fines are charged per day at departure and are enforced. Track your permitted stay from the stamp.
India travel
Nepal and India have their own movement arrangements for their citizens, which do not extend to third-country nationals.
