Start with a detail that sounds trivial and is not. Before booking an appointment, set your device’s time zone to Kathmandu. The booking system runs on Nepal time, and appointments booked against your local clock land on the wrong slot.

The payment instruction is worth reading twice. The money order must be made out to the embassy by its exact name, and the embassy states plainly that otherwise the application will not be processed.

Nepal does not technically renew passports: you apply for a new one, at the same fee as a first application, and the old book is cancelled on collection.

How to apply

  1. Set your device to Kathmandu time before opening the booking system.
  2. Complete the online application and book the appointment.
  3. Attend in person for fingerprints, photograph and signature.
  4. Bring your original passport, citizenship certificate and proof of U.S. status.
  5. Pay by money order made out exactly as the embassy specifies.
  6. Include a prepaid tracked return envelope unless you will collect in person.

Required documents

Where to apply

At the embassy in Washington. Nepal also maintains honorary consulates across the United States, whose services are narrower but which publish the same requirements.

Additional notes

No citizenship certificate? A two-year passport

Applicants over 16 who hold no citizenship certificate and cannot travel to Nepal to obtain one may renew with two years’ validity, once only. After that, the certificate is required. This is covered fully on the citizenship page.

Lost passports

Nepal requires a police report and, for applications filed at home, a notice published in a national newspaper declaring the passport lost.

Court holds

A pending case or a court travel order blocks passport issuance until the court lifts it. It is not something the embassy can resolve.

Expired passports are not usable

The embassy is explicit that you cannot travel on an expired Nepali passport, whatever the circumstances.
