Kenya requires something no other country in this directory does. Every passport application must be recommended by a Kenyan citizen who holds a valid passport or national identity card and who is not a relative. That person’s details go in section 7 of the form, and without them the application is incomplete.
Quick facts
Everything is filed through the national online platform and paid there. The mission’s role is the biometric appointment: a photograph, fingerprints, and verification of your original documents.
Fees breakdown
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary passport | Published on the platform | Booklet options changed during 2026 |
| Biometric capture abroad | Mission surcharge | Paid at the mission |
| Emergency travel document | Consular tariff | One journey, issued in 24–48 hours |
| Electronic travel authorisation | Around $30 | For visitors, not citizens |
| Document authentication | Consular tariff | Paid at the mission |
Be careful with figures you find online. The available booklet sizes and their prices were changed more than once during 2026, and published guides contradict each other. The platform is the only reliable source.

Additional notes
Declare the other nationality
Dual citizens are required to declare their other nationality before renewing a Kenyan passport. It is not optional and it is checked.
The 1987 and 2010 rule
People born before 27 August 1987 who acquired another citizenship before 27 August 2010 must first prove they have regained Kenyan citizenship, and must wait for that process to finish before applying. See the citizenship page.
Order matters at the counter
The missions publish the exact order in which documents should be arranged. Following it avoids being sent away.
Emergency travel
Where a passport is lost abroad, missions issue a single-journey document within a day or two, on production of a police report and an itinerary.
