Indian passports are not issued over a consulate counter in the United States. Every application — renewal, re-issue or replacement — is filed through VFS Global, which pre-checks the file and forwards it to the embassy or consulate holding jurisdiction over your U.S. address. Consulates do not accept applications directly.
Quick facts
Jurisdiction is decided by where you live, not by the nearest centre, and the U.S. jurisdictions were redrawn with effect from 1 August 2025. Filing under the wrong mission is one of the fastest ways to have a package returned.
Fees breakdown
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Booklet fee, 36 pages | $125 | Government of India fee |
| Booklet fee, 60 pages | $175 | Jumbo booklet |
| VFS Global service charge | $19 | Lower at some jurisdictions |
| Indian Community Welfare Fund | $2 | Mandatory contribution |
| Tatkal expedited service | plus $150 | Cuts processing, not shipping |
| Online payment convenience charge | About 3.75% | Charged over the total |
Fees have been revised more than once recently and courier charges are separate, so confirm the current schedule on the VFS portal for your jurisdiction before paying.
How to renew
- Complete the Government of India passport application online and note the reference number it generates.
- Register on the VFS portal, link that reference and complete the additional declarations.
- Download the checklist for your jurisdiction and assemble the package in the exact order it specifies, with the signed checklist on top.
- Pay the fees online, including the welfare fund contribution and the service charge.
- Submit in person at the VFS centre by appointment, or courier the package if postal submission is offered.
- Track the application and receive the new passport by courier. The old booklet is cancelled and returned.
Required documents
- Current passport, original, plus self-attested copies of the first and last pages.
- Proof of lawful U.S. status: visa page, green card, employment authorisation or approval notice.
- Proof of U.S. address matching the return address exactly.
- Two photographs, 2 by 2 inches, white background, to the Indian specification rather than the U.S. one.
- Indian address proof if the address printed in the passport is being changed.
- Additional forms where appearance, signature or personal particulars have changed.
Where to apply
Nine missions divide the United States between them, each paired with VFS centres. Check the jurisdiction table for your state before choosing where to send the package.

When you can apply
Re-issue is generally possible when the passport expires within a year, has already expired, or has run out of pages. Students in the United States are commonly allowed to apply within two years of expiry.
Photos and copies
Missing self-attested photocopies and U.S.-specification photographs are the two most common reasons a package is rejected before it ever reaches the consulate.
Lost or damaged passports
Replacement carries a higher fee and a police report, and adds verification steps that lengthen the timetable considerably.
Plan the timing
Between VFS handling, consulate processing and shipping, three to four months of lead time is realistic. Start well before any travel or visa renewal that depends on the new booklet.
