Civil Records for Hungary citizens in the United States — 2026

Revised October 2026, not yet country-checked. The office details below come from our directory and the apostille status was taken from the HCCH official status table, but this countryโ€™s procedure pages have not yet been through our source-by-source review. Treat what follows as the questions to ask, not as this countryโ€™s rules. Why we say so.

A birth, marriage or death that happens in the United States exists only in American records until it is entered in the Hungarian register as well. That second step is what later allows a child to obtain a passport, an heir to claim an estate, or a marriage to be recognised in Hungary.

Hungary maintains a comparatively large consular network in the United States: twelve offices across ten cities โ€” Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Coral Gables, Denver, Houston, New York and two more. That is a help and a trap at once, and the trap catches more people than the distance does.

Hungarian consular offices in the United States

Civil registration is filed at the career post whose district covers your state, which then forwards it to the register in Hungary:

A network this size is normally a small number of career consulates plus a larger number of honorary consuls. The difference matters more than the mileage: an honorary consul is usually a local resident appointed to represent the country part-time, and such posts generally cannot issue passports or visas. What they commonly do handle is certification of documents, forwarding applications, and help in an emergency.

So before travelling to whichever office is nearest, establish two things by telephone: which of the two kinds it is, and whether it performs the service you need. For a country with a network like this one, arriving at an honorary consulate for a service only a career consulate can give is the single commonest wasted journey.

The district question applies on top of that: among the career posts, the one that counts is the one covering your state, and districts are drawn by Hungary rather than by distance.

Worth knowing

Names cause more delay than missing papers. American records drop accents and reorder surnames, and consular offices generally need the discrepancy explained before they will act. Check that names and dates match across every document before you file.

Registering promptly is far easier than reconstructing a file years later, when the parents’ own documents may have expired.

Office names, addresses and telephone numbers on this page come from our directory, and the count above is taken from the same records as the listing. Procedural rules come from the authority itself โ€” always confirm with the office that covers you. Apostille status checked against the HCCH official status table on 2026-10-05.
