Ecuadorian Dual Citizenship in the U.S. โ€” 2026 Guide

Checked September 2026. This page was written for this country and its details were checked against the authorityโ€™s own sources that month. Consular rules still change without notice, so confirm anything that will cost you a journey or a fee with the office that covers you. How we check our data.

Ecuador recognises dual nationality, and the Constitution is clear that Ecuadorian nationality is not lost by acquiring another. A child born in the United States to an Ecuadorian father or mother is Ecuadorian, and the consular birth registration is what turns that into usable documents.

Ecuadorians who naturalise as U.S. citizens keep their nationality of origin and can renew an Ecuadorian passport at any consulate, whatever their immigration history.

Each step needs its own appointment, so a family registering a child should plan for two or three separate visits rather than one.

How to register a child

  1. Confirm that the Ecuadorian parent’s documents are current and that electoral obligations are clear.
  2. Order the state-issued birth certificate and keep the hospital record.
  3. Book the birth registration appointment on the official portal.
  4. Attend with both parents’ documents and the marriage certificate where applicable.
  5. Collect the Ecuadorian record once registered.
  6. Apply for the identity card and then the passport, each with its own appointment.

Required documents

Where to register

At the consulate covering your address, among the thirteen that serve the United States.

Additional notes

What it unlocks

An Ecuadorian passport, the identity card, inheritance and property rights on the same footing as any citizen, and the right to vote from abroad.

Voting is an obligation

For Ecuadorians registered abroad, voting is compulsory within the applicable age range, and unpaid fines block other consular procedures.

Adults registering late

There is no age limit, though older files are examined more closely and may need extra evidence of the parental link.

Plan the appointments

Registration, identity card and passport are three procedures. Booking them in sequence as slots appear is faster than waiting for all three at one post.
