Whether you need a visa for Denmark depends on your nationality, the purpose of the trip and its length โ and a growing number of countries have moved short visits to an online authorisation, which means the consular office may have no part in it at all. Settle that first, before arranging an appointment you may not need.
Denmark maintains a comparatively large consular network in the United States: sixteen consular offices, in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Dania Beach, Denver, Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and eight more. That is a help and a trap at once, and the trap catches more people than the distance does.

Visa categories are not handled at every post. Apply through the career post whose district covers your state:

The difference matters more than the mileage: an honorary consul is usually a local resident appointed to represent the country part-time, and such posts generally cannot issue passports or visas. What they commonly do handle is certification of documents, forwarding applications, and help in an emergency.
So before travelling to whichever office is nearest, establish two things by telephone: which of the two kinds it is, and whether it performs the service you need. For a country with a network like this one, arriving at an honorary consulate for a service only a career consulate can give is the single commonest wasted journey.
The district question applies on top of that: among the career posts, the one that counts is the one covering your state, and districts are drawn by Denmark rather than by distance.
Before you apply
- Confirm whether a visa is required at all for your nationality and your trip. U.S. passport holders are exempt in many countries and not in others, and the answer depends on your passport, not your residence.
- Identify the right category. Tourism, business, study, work, transit and family visits have different requirements, and applying under the wrong one usually means starting again.
- Ask whether the application is made online or in person, and whether biometric data is collected at an appointment.
- Ask the fee and the accepted payment method directly. Published tariffs change, and third-party sites quoting a price are often resellers.
- Allow far more time than you expect. Ask the office for its current processing time rather than relying on any general figure.
Documents usually requested
- A passport with validity well beyond the intended stay, and blank pages.
- The completed application form for your category.
- Photographs to the specification given.
- Travel and accommodation details, or an invitation where the category requires one.
- Evidence of funds, insurance or vaccination certificates where applicable.
- Proof of lawful residence in the United States, for third-country nationals.
A warning worth repeating
A Danish visa is permission to seek entry, not a guarantee of it. The decision belongs to the immigration officer at the border, and in most countries there is no appeal. Carry your supporting documents with you rather than in checked luggage.
