Cambodia is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. An apostille is therefore useless here. Documents follow the full legalisation chain, and the embassy asks specifically for the original authenticated letter from the U.S. Department of State, with a copy of the whole document attached.
Quick facts
The federal stage is the one that takes the time, and the embassy wants the original of that authentication rather than a copy. Once it has it, its own step is quick: seven working days plus return shipping.
The chain
| Step | Who does it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Notarisation | U.S. notary public | For private documents |
| State certification | Secretary of State | Of the issuing state |
| Federal authentication | U.S. Department of State | Original letter required |
| Consular legalisation | Embassy of Cambodia | 7 working days |
| Khmer translation | Usually in Cambodia | Confirm with the receiving office |
Because there is one Cambodian mission handling this for the whole country, everything travels to Washington, which makes tracked shipping in both directions a practical necessity rather than a precaution.
How to prepare a document
- Ask the receiving office in Cambodia exactly what it requires.
- Order a certified copy, or have the private document notarised.
- Obtain the Secretary of State certification.
- Obtain the federal authentication and keep the original letter.
- Send to the embassy with a copy of the whole document and a money order.
- Include a prepaid return envelope with a tracking number.
Required documents
- Original authenticated letter from the Department of State.
- One copy of the complete document.
- Money order or certified cashier’s check payable to the embassy.
- Prepaid return envelope with tracking.
- Valid contact number and email address.
What the embassy does
It issues passports and travel documents, requests Cambodian birth certificates for children born abroad, legalises documents, issues letters for the repatriation of remains, handles visas and assists Cambodian nationals in difficulty.
Additional notes
An apostille is wasted money
If a service offers you one for Cambodia, they have not checked. The country is outside the convention.
Build in the federal wait
That stage takes weeks and cannot be skipped. The embassy’s seven working days start afterwards.
Send copies, not originals, where told
For some services the embassy explicitly says not to send the original. Read each service’s list rather than assuming.
Track everything
One mission, one address, and documents crossing the country twice. Tracking is required for a reason.
