Two things changed for Brazilians in the United States during 2026. Consular passport fees were cut by half from 1 June, and from 30 July every passport requested at a consulate here is printed by the national mint in Brazil and returned by diplomatic pouch before being handed over or posted.
Quick facts
Payment is by USPS postal money order only, for the exact amount and made out to the consulate. Cash, cards and personal checks are not accepted anywhere in the network.
Fees breakdown
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary passport, adult | $60 | Halved from $120 on 1 June 2026 |
| Passport for minors | Reduced in the same proportion | Check the current table |
| Appointment on e-consular | Free | Official system only |
| Return postage | Prepaid envelope you supply | Priority or Express Mail |
Fees are set in a consular unit of account and charged in dollars, so the table can move. Confirm the exact amount before buying the money order, because an incorrect one stops the file.
How to renew
- Create an account on the e-consular system and open a request under the consulate covering your state.
- Scan and upload the full document set. The consulate reviews it before anything physical is sent.
- Once the upload is approved, the system offers the option to send the physical documents, original or notarised, by mail.
- Include the money order for the exact fee and a prepaid return envelope.
- Wait for the passport to be printed in Brazil and returned by pouch, around sixty business days for mail applications.
- Collect it in person or receive it by post, depending on how the request was filed.
Required documents
- Document set approved in e-consular, with the physical originals identical to what was scanned.
- Active taxpayer number, which the consulate checks and which is a common blocking point.
- Previous passport. Failing to present a valid previous passport reduces the validity of the new one for applicants over 18.
- Brazilian civil status certificate where the name has changed.
- Proof of military service standing where it applies.
- For minors: written authorisation from both parents.
Where to apply
Eleven consulates divide the United States between them, each with its own assigned states. Applications are filed with the office covering your address, not the nearest one.

The taxpayer number comes first
An inactive or missing taxpayer number blocks the passport. Consulates issue and regularise it, so deal with that before opening the passport request.
Everything starts online
There is no walk-in route. The e-consular upload is the application, and the physical envelope only follows once the consulate has approved the scans.
Nationality annotations
Consulates cannot provide passport or registry services to someone whose birth certificate carries a nationality annotation. That has to be resolved first, which for older registrations means a court procedure in Brazil.
Plan the timing
Sixty business days is roughly three months before postage. Anyone with travel booked should start well ahead or ask about emergency travel documents.
