Armenian Dual Citizenship in the U.S. โ€” 2026 Guide

Checked September 2026. This page was written for this country and its details were checked against the authorityโ€™s own sources that month. Consular rules still change without notice, so confirm anything that will cost you a journey or a fee with the office that covers you. How we check our data.
Data last verified: September 2026

Armenia fully recognises dual and multiple citizenship, which makes the diaspora question a genuine choice rather than a dilemma. But that choice has a sharp edge, and it is about sons: citizenship brings military service, residency does not.

Quick facts

Dual citizenshipFully recognised
FilingOnline portal since January 2026
Granted byPresidential decree, then an oath
Men naturalising over 18Service liability until 37

The rule is specific: men over 18 who are granted Armenian citizenship become subject to military service before they turn 37, unless they completed mandatory service of 12 months or alternative service of 18 months before acquiring it.

Citizenship or residency

ConsiderationCitizenshipSpecial residency
Vote and hold officeYesNo
Military serviceYes, for men, until 37No
Armenian passportYesNo, use your national one
Tax residence by itselfNo, presence decides itNo
Minimum stay or languageTest and oath requiredNone

One reassurance worth stating plainly: obtaining Armenian citizenship while continuing to live abroad does not by itself make you an Armenian tax resident. That depends on physical presence or on establishing your centre of vital interests there.

How to apply

  1. Decide between citizenship and residency, weighing the service question for any sons.
  2. Gather proof of Armenian origin and the supporting civil documents, apostilled and translated.
  3. File through the unified electronic portal, which has handled citizenship applications since January 2026.
  4. Prepare for the constitution knowledge test.
  5. Once the decree is issued, take the oath of allegiance.
  6. Then apply for the passport, the identity card and address registration.

Required documents

Where to apply

Through the unified electronic portal of the Migration and Citizenship Service; missions assist with documents and consents.

Additional notes

Sons first, paperwork second

For diaspora families, the service liability is the decision that matters. Residency formalises the connection without creating it; citizenship creates it. Decide that before filing anything.

The oath comes before the documents

Passport, identity card and address registration are collected after the oath, not before.

The portal is new

Citizenship filings moved to a single electronic system in January 2026, so guidance written earlier describes a process that no longer applies.

Tax advice separately

Citizenship does not create tax residence by itself, but if you plan to spend real time in Armenia, take advice on where your interests sit.
